Overall, Trophy is a wildly ambitious intelligent work of great literary merit. If there is anything that detracts from its quality, it may be that it gets a little ahead of itself sometimes. The story does indeed get very difficult to follow at certain points, but perhaps this is to remain faithful to the complex nature of any stream-of-consciousness work like this one. Fans of Faulkner, Pynchon, Ellis, and the like would definitely do well to give this novel a shot.
However, for those uninitiated with the styles of authors such as those this work may very well prove to be a bit frustrating and perhaps a little too inaccessible. If you are willing to challenge yourself though, and have a respect for deep thought provoking literature that’s new and contemporary, you can do no better this summer than with Trophy by Michael Griffith.
